VUG SERIES

BACKGROUND

This series explores the impact of a specific geological structure -- vugs. Small cavities, often cracks, within rocks that frequently contain crystals. Geodes, different, but similar crystal containing structures, are produced in roughly spherical voids formed by trapped gas bubbles in volcanic rock, or by the dissolution of organic matter in sedimentary rock.

This series draws directly from the striking natural features encountered within the vast and varied landscapes of the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau. Viewers are encouraged not only to admire the aesthetic qualities but also to develop a greater appreciation for the science responsible for desert landscapes.

The medium—the use of painted steel and abstract shapes—was carefully chosen to reflect both the physical structure and the timeless qualities of rocks and crystals, reinforcing the theme of natural beauty grounded in scientific reality.

It is hoped that those who engage with the works will leave with enhanced awareness and respect for the elements that compose the natural world around them, bridging the gap between art, science, and personal experience.
