My art explores “Association.” How do line, form, composition, color, lighting and title create an association with a place or event? What is the minimum required for the viewer to evoke an association to a memory? My shaped painting “Zion Canyon,” for instance, consisting of four box shapes painted just two colors evokes memories for me of visiting Zion National Park. A title is not needed as the scene is immediately recognizable to me from my numerous visits. It may evoke a different memory for other viewers depending on their experiences.
Inspiration:
Artists and architects: Rothko, Frank Stella, Motherwell, Gail Morris, Frank Gehry
Styles:
Minimalism, Color field theory, Abstraction
Personal:
Twenty-five summers of field work as a mycologist collecting specimens in the Intermountain West provides a rich source of memories of isolation, stark landscapes, harsh light, geological formations, sparse gray-green vegetation, the taste of alkaline dust, and the odor of crushed sage and conifers.
Approach:
Shaped paintings are constructed that mimic the topography of the Great Basin creating shadows that change depending on the source and quality of light, time of day, etc.
